CAFFE: Packs of Love & Compassion by guest blogger Maribela

Maribela is a 5th grade student at our school. Please take a moment to read about her community project.

Maribela's Final Update:
This is my last blog entry! Packs of love and compassion is ending, sadly but it was a fun adventure!!!!

I have met my goal! I collected 95 backpacks!!!!! Wow, that's a lot of backpacks!!! I can’t wait to pass them out to the homeless tomorrow at the Cesar Chavez Park!!! Even better, while I'm passing out the backpacks to the homeless, Good Day Sacramento is going to be there and I'm going to be on tv again!!!

Friends and family, all the way from Truckee and Woodland have donated backpacks! I really appreciate all the backpacks people have donated for Packs of Love and Compassion.

I always wanted to give back to my community, and I am very glad I got to do this! Some kids don’t have everything that I have and something just like 1 backpack can make there day and mine too!

Thank you guys so much for donating backpacks for the homeless! It has been so fun! Can’t wait till next year!

Here is an update on her project!

This is a updated blog from three weeks ago (January 15th) about my Community project called Packs Of Love And Compassion. I am still continuing collecting backpacks for the homeless!

I started collecting backpacks January 20th! I have received so far backpacks all the way from Woodland,Truckee & here Natomas! I have also created a flier and a bin to put up in the front office for any backpacks you want to donate with the help of my teacher Mrs.Rohrbacker and some of my friends!

I can’t wait to deliver some wonderful backpacks to the homeless on Valentine’s Day! If you have any backpacks please take them to the front office! I appreciate it and I know the homeless will too!

One of the most important things I’m learning in life is that it’s important to give back to my community. Something that’s been a concern to me lately is the homeless & makes me sad when I see a girl my age with her family out on the streets not having a home or food to eat. I think to myself, “That could be me and my family.”

Around three years ago I met a friend of my mom’s by the name of Armando Flores. He is the founder of an organization called CAFFE (Clothing And Food For Everyone!) that provides food, clothing & necessities for the less fortunate. All the items are donated by private individuals. Every Sunday at 8:00, CAFFE feeds the homeless at the Cesar Chavez park.

I am so excited to be involved with a project called Packs of Love & Compassion, that CAFFE is hosting. They are looking for gently used backpacks to donate to the less fortunate for Valentine's Day!

It makes me feel good that I can give back to my community!

My goal is to collect 75 backpacks by February 11th & deliver them to Cesar Chavez Park in Sacramento on February 14th for Valentine’s Day. If you would like to donate a backpack I will be collecting them through February 11th at Star Academy.

For more information, please contact our principal Jennifer Kloczko at jkloczko@natomascharter.org. Backpacks may be delivered to Star Academy, located at 4400 East Commerce Way #100 in Natomas.
