September 26th-30th #littlebylittle

Did you know our teachers all have a blog? Often they post about what students are learning in class, or post student work to celebrate. And sometimes they reflect on the work that we do. This post was written by Carly Rohrbacker, one of our fifth grade teachers. It's been a wild ride opening an amazing new campus. But if you look, there are lots of little things to celebrate! Read her post and leave a comment! What little things do you see that you love? (You can find our teacher blogs on the staff directory page on the Star website at star.natomascharter.org)

September 19th-23rd #kindness

Welcome to our Star Academy blog! For several years we have had a blog and have used it to highlight special events and to share posts from guest bloggers including students, teachers, and parents! This year, we will be posting each week and celebrating things that are happening at our school, posting upcoming dates and details, and sharing information and inspiration about reading! We LOVE to read at Star!

Something that is very important to us at Star is kindness, and we talk about it all the time! We want this to be a community where everyone speaks to each other politely, and where students feel safe and happy. Of course, this work is ongoing and we know that not every day is going to be perfect. But, we do work hard to communicate that things like kindness and empathy are important to all of us and we want to help students learn how to do this. One way we do this is by modeling it as adults and staff in the way we greet and speak with each other, and to families and students whenever we meet. Mrs. Hines also runs an amazing Kind Kids Club, where each month a grade level does random acts of kindness for others. This month, it's first grade's turn! We were inspired to start our Kind Kids Club by a video made by a school near Fresno. Here is the video if you'd like to check it out!

Kid President also inspires us here at Star! Here is one video we love!

At Star Academy we LOVE to read! All kinds of books, teachers, staff, and students. And every Monday this year, we'll post in our Star Facebook group and on our Twitter feed something about what we are reading! There is even a hashtag for "It's Monday! What Are You Reading?" on Twitter: #IMWAYR. Star Academy is on Twitter! You can follow us at https://twitter.com/staracademyncs-- all of our teachers are on Twitter!

Tons of authors are on Twitter, too. Also, Mrs. Kahler, Mrs. Hines and I will also be reading a book each month to all of the classes and we are kicking it off next week with last year's Newbery winner -- Last Stop On Market Street. Here is the book trailer by the author and illustrator. Have a great week!
